The first thing I tell all of my style clients is that every well-dressed man needs a full-length mirror in a well-lit part of his house. Anything short of this is setting yourself up for failure.
Would you try to assemble furniture with your eyes closed? Of course not. So why would you try to assemble your look (your self-presentation for the day) under those same conditions?
The error irresistible to FNG's (Fucking New Guys) is to seek flourish over fundamentals. Because let's be real: no one comes to a fight gym excited to stumble around, trying to stay in their fighting stance. We want the Rocky training montage, to find glory under the big lights, and to do some badass ninja moves!
You have seven seconds to make a first impression. Or maybe up to thirty, depending on which study you put your faith in. Either way, an overwhelming deluge of research on the matter consistently agrees on two points: everyone you meet is in a hurry to make up their mind about you, and once they do, it’s pretty hard to change.
Fighting, style, and fighting styles come in a very wide variety. Everyone carries their own history, motivations, and experiences that will influence how they navigate and interact with the world. We all have our own way of doing things and that's okay. But not all ways are equal; some are flat-out inferior. Wrong, if you will.
A bit inflammatory, huh? But it's true.
I'm a professional fighter, a style consultant, and I'm highly opinionated on both topics. That said, it's just common courtesy not to stuff it down people's throats in real life, so I figured I'd make a blog where people can ingest my rants at their own leisure... Should the interest (read: masochism) strike them.
Unlike the articles that I've written on style (clients only*), this writing will be very informal so expect tons of typos, sub-optimal grammar/punctuation, and probably more swearing. As in, this will be shittier -- but possibly more entertaining?
Yup. Let's do this!
